Official Opening Press Conference: Tackling the global housing crisis.

The resumed second session of the United Nations Habitat Assembly will take place from 29 to 30 May 2025 at the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The President of the United Nations Habitat Assembly, the host country, Kenya, and the Executive Director of UN-Habitat will announce to the media the focus of the resumed session of the Assembly. They will explain the urgency of addressing the global housing crisis affecting as many as 3 billion people globally, and how housing, land, and basic services are essential to address key global challenges, including poverty and inequality, conflicts, climate change, and geopolitical divides.
The press conference will focus on the topic of housing and how to tackle the global housing crisis, conveying a call to action by all relevant actors.

The United Nations Habitat Assembly is a universal body composed of the 193 Member States of the United Nations. It serves as the main legislative body for global urban policy-making and is the highest decision-making authority on housing, urbanization and human settlements.

At its second session, held in Nairobi in June 2023, the United Nations Habitat Assembly adopted several key resolutions – including on adequate housing for all, the transformation of informal settlements and slums, and guidelines on people-centred smart cities. The resumed second session primarily aims to conclude outstanding matters carried over from the adjourned session, including:

· Consideration and possible adoption of the Strategic Plan 2026–2029 with a focus on housing, land, and basic services

· Consideration and possible adoption of the international guidelines on people-centred smart cities

· Consideration and possible adoption of the stakeholder engagement policy

· Election of 36 members to the Executive Board of UN-Habitat

· Election of the Bureau of the United Nations Habitat Assembly

The Assembly will open on 29 May 2025 with a ceremonial session and will conclude on 30 May 2025.
